Everybody agrees that R&D should be aligned with the business, but what is R&D’s role in driving new business strategies? What role can and should R&D play in mastering the innovation challenge? And how can we take account of short-term market and customer needs without destroying the basis for (often unexpected) breakthrough?

This EIRMA Round Table meeting, held in Dusseldorf in September 2013 and chaired by EIRMA Individual Member Joachim von Heimburg, considered these issues. Here von Heimburg outlines some of the thinking that emerged from the meeting.
