25 October 2011 at Intel Labs Europe, Dublin, Ireland

Summary

Even if most executives acknowledge the need to explore new businesses and markets, they often cannot resist the pressure of core business. Often the CTO/CIO is the only real support for Innovation. On the other hand the organisations that have been successful in innovation seemed to have been able to balance the needs for breakthrough innovation efforts and needs of core business.

Most large corporations have systems in place to screen ideas and to manage resource allocation. While these systems are great for measuring profitability and meeting financial targets, they can kill a promising idea before it has a chance to blossom into a true innovation. We often know only afterwards if it is about Breakthrough Innovations!

Perhaps of the general trend towards a more open approach to innovation, large companies see increasing value in corporate venturing as a strategic tool for enhancing innovation processes.
Interventions at the CTO forum will concentrate on the following questions:
What elements (strategies and structure) are allowing some large companies to succeed or fail in unleashing breakthrough innovations and what is the role of CTOs and CIOs in this process? Is there enough tension on the top to push breakthrough innovations? Is embracing inconsistency a key to breakthrough innovations in the large organisation? How to use corporate venturing as a strategic tool for enhancing innovation processes?

Overall future trends in innovation management concepts and changes in the role of CTO/CIO will also be discussed. What approaches and concepts are going to be ground-breaking in the next 10 years and what will this mean for the role of CTO/CIO and other business leaders?
