EIRMA Representatives' Round Table 2017

The Hollywood Model for Innovation: The new approach to funding R&D?

Representatives’ Round Table

26-27 January 2017, Hotel Tivoli Oriente, Lisbon, Portugal

Companies find it challenging today to justify long-term, risky R&D investments. What if you could hire teams that execute quickly on specific, short-term goals?

Henry Chesbrough compares the new world of R&D to Hollywood’s culture, in which producers, directors, actors, screenwriters, technical workers, and specialty subcontractors collaborate through a fluid network of partnerships and alliances.

This model is easily adaptable and it allows you to reassess constantly where to invest your money. Furthermore, it has been successfully replicated across different sectors, like designing apps or starting restaurant.

Is it time for the R&D community to consider a different financing model?

The outsourced R&D approach described by the Hollywood model raises a set of challenges, compared to traditional vertical R&D.

The Representatives’ Round Table will examine the experience of different sectors using this model, to provide insights in where it’s useful and how to implement it.

Issues addressed

  • How could the Hollywood model help R&D organisations to get the most from the new environment for collaborative innovation (Public-private partnerships, crowd sourcing, scientific challenges)?
What skills do you need internally to make this work?
How do you interact with the talent pool to ensure that you get the best people when you need them?
In a highly outsourced model, how do you preserve continuity of knowledge and provide internal career path?
Does the Hollywood model drive companies to become expert portfolio investors in new technologies to justify risky long term opportunities?

Target Audience

Senior R&D Directors and Managers, Innovation and Technology Managers, R&D Strategic Analysts, Financial managers and Internal Communications in R&D.
We encourage Representatives to come along with Leaders from their Business Units.
