Special Interest Group on Human (F)Actor in Innovation: Whither Middle Managers ?

02.12.2011

This Special Interest Group meeting will be held in Paris at Novotel Vaugirard.

Summary

This Special Interest Group (SIG-V) is dedicated to exploring the Human (F)Actor in Innovation. Despite the development of ever more refined management processes, many organisations find it extremely difficult to make a significant change in their innovation capability. Where in the organisation are the bottlenecks and barriers that hinder innovation from happening?   Do they come from our management of People rather than our choice of Processes?  What opportunities might this present?

This third meeting will look in particular at the scope for effectively aligning middle managers to be a prime part of the solution, and not the bottleneck. Their empowerment by senior managers, and in turn their engagement of their direct reports will be a critical discussion. Not least we will wish to explore whether radical changes in such management roles are changing this landscape.

Issues addressed

  • Scope out how the existing knowledge of human and organisational psychologies could be applied to innovation management
  • Identify the emotional and behavioural elements that are critical for successful innovation in organisations and locate the best tools for their assessment
  • Explore the issues of passion, power, and motivation
  • Discuss how to fuse organisational and individual values, beliefs, and models to contribute to an enhancement of innovation
  • Debate how to manage a “real” behaviour change in the organization
  • Build a portfolio of new tools for innovation managers that address the human (f)actors

Target Audience

The objective of the Special Interest Group is to gather together R&D and Innovation experts, managers and directors who wish to share and work on these challenges on a more regular or continuous basis typically two meetings per year and informal teleconferencing when necessary.
This third meeting will work on one of the themes that emerged from the discussions amongst the participants at the inaugural meeting in October 2010.

Chairman

Dr. Phil Gamlen, Senior Fellow in Executive Education, Manchester Business School
