Industry 4.0 and Open Industry Platforms: How can IP and data management support your company to get there?

24 & 25 November 2016 hosted by EDF Lab Paris Saclay, France

Today industry is facing the fourth revolution with its cyber-physical systems, internet of things, big data production and cloud computing. It will take companies to the next level of production, often also addressed as “Industry 4.0”.

The paradigm shift in competition is a big challenge for the classical producing industry, and more and more companies realise that they have to change their business model and business strategy in order to maintain their competitiveness and to be fit for the future challenges of industry 4.0.
Currently, various open industry platform models are discussed where inter alea the management of, ownership in, and access to IP and data are addressed.

This meeting will focus on the management of IP and data in this new world of Industry 4.0.
Key patents are owned by newcomers, and data are produced everywhere both within the R&D and production chain and by the products released on the market and used by the customers. This new world - where production and products are forming cyber-physical systems connected by the internet - is leading to a strong need for new business models and for a new legislation that is globally adapted to this paradigm shift in business.

During the meeting, the participants will enjoy a dedicated visit to EDF showroom and the brand new labs in the south of Paris.

Issues addressed

  • What are the major problems of IP & data management in the world of Industry 4.0?
What can be protected in Industry 4.0 and how to protect it?
Who are the owners of the data produced in Industry 4.0? Who has the right to use them? What are the legal limitations and constraints of using these data? (eg. in case of data gathered by 3rd party subcontractor having rented/leased equipment in your facilities)
What is the impact of IP onto open industry platforms proposed for Industry 4.0?
Use of open software platforms: how open (how proprietary) are the proposed open industry platforms?
Use of data mining tools to ‘invent’ (and how will you transfer this into a patent example description without looking ‘obvious’)

Target Audience

R&D, innovation & intellectual asset managers and experts, IP and licensing managers, patent attorneys as well as business strategy, business development managers, Corporate Venturing managers.
