Special Interest Group on Knowledge Management: Governing Social Networks in R&D
The Special Interest Group will be located at Maritim ProArte Hotel, Berlin, Germany.
Summary
Social Media is enabling a fast mass co-operation and it is allowing formerly hidden social structures to emerge. There is a potential to deliver a new category of information based on social interactions. This information can be used to inform operational processes, facilitate engagement with employees, customers, and business partners.
The Social Networks are estimated to have more than billion users by year 2012. People use social networks in their private lives but organisations tend to fear them and to lock-down employee access to Social Networks. Everyone agrees that governing of Social Networks is necessary but how to do it without damaging the openness and the need for increased co-operation in the companies?
Global R&D requires new networking capabilities but also a need to address intellectual property issues on common projects. Copyright and privacy laws vary from one country to another yet the communication is global. How to protect your organisation when sharing knowledge and information in this new environment?
