Welcome to eIQ

Welcome to the second electronic edition of Innovation Quarterly. eIQ is published by EIRMA to give you an insight into trends and policies that affect business R&D and innovation management, and to enable you to access background data to explore the issues further, as well as sharing the information with colleagues.

It’s been 40 years since the founding of the European Industrial Research Management Association. This issue focuses how industrial R&D in Europe and throughout the world has changed since 1966 – and what we can expect in the future. In View from the Past, one of EIRMA’s founder members reflects on how much has changed, and how much has stayed the same. Professor Stephen Emmott of Microsoft Research Cambridge takes a look at the impact computer science will have on research in years to come in his View from the Future.

In Reshaping Europe, we examine shifting policies at the European Commission, following the European Business Summit in March. Forward the Revolution looks at the seven “revolutions” that are set to reshape the world over the next 15 years, as identified by Erik Peterson and his colleagues at the Global Strategy Institute. Time to Change – Before it’s too Late considers the crisis facing European companies, as thousands of skilled professionals depart each year to work in the US. Will better attitudes, greater motivation and a stronger role for small- and medium-sized enterprises successfully reverse the trend?

Our regular look at intellectual property considers the pros and cons of patent insurance, and our Country Profile looks east, to Poland. As always, this issue includes news, details of upcoming activities and a chance to catch up on recent conferences and round tables, as well as information about EIRMA.

While the publishing industry has changed as much as any other, and the role of electronic media is on the increase, we believe that there is still a place for paper. If you would prefer to print these articles out, PDF links to all stories and diagrams are included. You can also share the contents of this newsletter with colleagues using the email buttons. To retrieve articles from this and previous issues of eIQ, the digital object identification (DOI) number at the end of each item can be used as a reference on the EIRMA website.
