This informal and by-invitation meeting of chief technology, scientific and research officers, will assess the effectiveness of corporate R&D activities carried out with universities and other public research organisations. IP: Patents and beyond, SIG-II Meeting - 12-13 June 2008, Warsaw

This meeting took in the general framework of IP support in Europe, as well as looking at possible future European IP scenarios. Participants discussed recent important changes brought about by the European Patent Convention 2000 and proposals for a European Patent Court.
Participants also heard about practices in Poland and in other parts of central and eastern Europe, as well as getting practical guidance about prevent IP theft from electronic files.

Planning Effectively - Challenges and Big Opportunities, Annual Conference - 21-23 May 2008, Montreux

The conference looked at ways of developing and managing balanced R&D portfolios that address the current business cycle but also looked beyond it, recognising opportunities that will come from the Grand Challenges of new science, new ways of working, and societal ambitions.
An accompanying visit to CERN gave an opportunity to discuss industrial involvement in large science with members of CERN's senior management, and to see progress on the Large Hadron Collider.

Knowledge on the Move, SIG-III Meeting - 24 April 2008, Munich

Knowledge and know-how is added to a company through recruitment and acquisitions and mergers, through collaborations and joint ventures, etc. It can be lost through de-mergers, divestments and people leaving the company.
Case studies illustrated how companies deal with the inflow of knowledge through acquisitions and mergers, and how they handle knowledge when they have acquisitions or spin-outs.
