Responsible Partnering
Responsible path to better relationships between industry and academia
The latest version of a set of guidelines intended to make collaborations between industry and academia more successful for both parties has been released.
The first version of the Handbook of Responsible Partnering was launched in March 2006. It offered a voluntary code of conduct for enterprises and public research organisations that would help them make the most of collaborative research over the long term. Consistent guidelines, checklists and tools were designed to enable partners to collaborate more effectively, while maintaining their core missions of research, education and innovation.
The initiative stems from joint work by EIRMA, the European University Association, the European Association of Research and Technology Organisations; and the Public Research Organisations Transfer Offices Network.
The Handbook’s recommendations were backed at launch by Janez Potocnik, then European Commissioner for science and research, and Gunter Verheugen, then vice-president of the European Commission in charge of enterprise and industry. The initiative was also endorsed by Esko Aho, the former Finnish prime minister, in his report on “Creating an Innovative Europe”.
The new version of the Handbook has been updated to include information on the complex issues surrounding the eligibility of industrial/academic collaborations for state aid; and an extended section on the human aspects of effective collaborative research.
The latest edition also adds a new checklist for organisations interested in using the guidelines, and a more detailed checklist for situations involving the supervision and training of PhD candidates.
Business Europe, the federation of Europe's business associations, backed the use of Responsible Partnering techniques in its 2009 publication "Innovation: Building a Successful Future for Europe".
The Handbook is available in English, French, Spanish, German, Italian and Czech versions.
