Knowledge transfer enhancements update: approaches in the business environment of 2010
Summary
An increasingly dynamic workforce is making companies want to use knowledge management techniques to capture what their employees learn and know before they change their jobs or retire. Living in a knowledge based society KM is part of the learning offering for individual employees and the demonstration of learning development/curve of a company as a whole.
Knowledge Management departments are often part of IT departments. It seems likely that the IT component of KM will be more strongly influenced by human resources issues as the importance of user acceptance becomes more and more recognized. The organizations are becoming highly multicultural which will result companies in trying to integrate multiple KM systems or trying to choose applications that work well for all the cultural groups in the company. Today organisations provide top-down approach for the information and knowledge sharing proposing structure and rigour as key elements to Knowledge sharing. Given the cultural issues and a requirement for openness there are many challenges to be overcome. Breaking down these barriers may help organizations to realize that knowledge sharing and collaboration provide powerful low-cost learning opportunities.
Public social media tools such as blogs, wikis, video-sharing sites and crowdsourcing enable anyone to interact online by publishing, adding, editing, or rating the information. How the new social technologies transform innovation efforts today and in the future? How to avoid misuse related to Web 2.0 tools leading possibly to accidental or deliberate disclosure of proprietary information resulting to personal or corporate damages are the real issues that must be addressed.
This Special Interest Group will also explore Information overload e.g. loads of e-mails, segregation of knowledge across various sources and systems etc. as well as different search functions which are playing a powerful role in everyday work.
Finally, we will address the questions of what is happening to the quality of knowledge capture as superficial ‘PowerPoints’ are becoming more used than solid reports and how to improve the sustainability of digital media; PDF-A, and other tools?
