» 2009 Conference, A Larger Europe in a Smaller World, Budapest, 3-5 June |
The business world and the industrial R&D world are currently facing great challenges – amongst others an unprecedented economic crisis – and at the same time meeting new opportunities for entering innovative partnerships in Europe and worldwide. EIRMA's 2009 conference provides the opportunity to explore the R&D potential in Central and Eastern Europe and parts of Asia, to assess the new global context for R&D and the challenges and opportunities that will be provided by the radical changes that lie ahead.
If we don't drive for better R&D, who else is entitled? The EIRMA annual conference in Budapest underlines our responsibility to develop Europe's industry as one of the global pillars of progress in a closer world. Friedrich Pinnekamp, EIRMA Vice-President, ABB Vice President Group R&D

» Responsible Partnering |
In today's world of Open Innovation, it is vital that companies and public research institutions work together well and for mutual benefit. Responsible Partnering is about ensuring that collaborative research activities and knowledge exchange are effective and reflect partners' interests. We've developed guidelines, checklists and procedures to help make this happen. You can download the Handbook or visit the official website at www.responsible-partnering.org.
Developed jointly with EIRMA's sister associations, EARTO, EUA and Proton Europe, Responsible Partnering was launched in March 2006 and validated through widespread consultations. A Review Conference in Lisbon in December 2007 assessed progress and identified next key steps. The guidelines have helped to shape the European Commission's recommendations to Member States in its recent Communication on management of intellectual property and knowledge transfer by universities and other public research organisations.
Originally launched to address concerns over collaborative research and knowledge transfer, Responsible Partnering now clearly extends into other areas, such as the education and training that people receive at Doctoral level and the role of the business community in encouraging young people to take up careers in research, technology and innovation.

» The Future of Innovation |
Innovation is changing in response to globalisation, the increasing complexity of products and services, and growing awareness that new ideas can come from anywhere. Europe’s most senior innovation managers meet regularly under the auspices of the European Industrial Research Management Association to discuss the changes taking place and how firms can respond. » Building the European Research Area |
The European Research Area (ERA) aims to provide the conditions for R&D to be a truly effective part of the European knowledge economy. EIRMA has helped shape the debate on ERA in several ways including through active participation in leading Expert Group studies. In December 2008, the EU's Competitiveness Council adopted a 2020 Vision for ERA, reflecting many of the features that EIRMA has encouraged, including the need for Europe to be more attractive to the people and businesses that engage in research and innovation, and the accompanying need to be relevant to the interests and priorities of civil society.
Leading up to this vision, the 2008 ERA Rationales Report highlights the need for greater public understanding of how ERA will support Europe's future, calls for Grand Challenges linked to evident economic, environmental and social priorities as a way to achieve the impact that ERA deserves, and emphasises the importance of flexible R&D-friendly ecosystems. The FP6 Ex-Post Evaluation makes similar calls and points towards a Framework Programme that will be widely recognised for its Great Ideas and Global Excellence and appreciated for its Game Changing contributions to European and Global priorities.
