Background
2024 won’t be without challenges for the European industry. The continent must redefine its place as a hot hub for innovation, safe to invest and prosper. To the East, we need a new industrial strategy to boost domestic industry and cut dependencies on foreign suppliers, mainly China. To the West, we need to respond to the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) passed last year by US President Joe Biden. The IRA includes a $369-billion envelope of tax credits and direct rebates to promote investment in green technology, but only if these products are predominately manufactured in North America.
Europe must now send the right signal to investors, start-ups, and established manufacturers that it remains a dynamic region fully committed to digital-driven supply chain resilience and climate neutrality.
EU Challenges
Many European companies and organizations have embraced the EU’s vision of a climate-neutral economy by 2050. While the foundational technologies are largely available – or are well on their way to maturity – the question of scale-up and deployment looms ever larger. The transformation lying ahead of us has in fact no historical precedent in scale or speed.
