FROM DIGITAL TOOLS TO A FULLY DIGITALIZED R&D FUNCTION – A JOURNEY TOWARDS THE LABORATORY OF THE FUTURE

CONTEXT:

“Everything that be digitalized, will be”, or so some digitalization pundits say. If R&D is all about intelligence, insights and ideas, then digitalization is set to eventually affect every aspect of it. And indeed, over the last years we have already seen an abundance of digital use cases and business results across the innovation community, many of which have also been presented at previous EIRMA meetings. But unlike for instance in the digitalization of  manufacturing and supply chains, there is no such thing as best practice and roadmap in digitalizing innovation, nor does there appear to be any view on the what the “end state” might be.

This is not so much a problem for R&D leaders who have just embarked on their digitalization journey, but it is definitely holding back many who have reached a point where initiatives need to be streamlined and focused on areas where their returns and differentiation potential are highest. How to move ahead from the scattered implementation of digital tools to a people-centric approach, dramatically enhancing how innovators in the company learn, think, originate ideas, connect and deliver innovations.

In this workshop we will see where many R&D leaders stand today through example use cases and digitalization roadmaps and together discuss lessons learned. 

ISSUES ADDRESSED:

• How to streamline digitalization efforts in R&D at larger companies?
• How to shift gears towards digitalization of the end-to-end innovation function?
• How to define the “north star” of such a journey as a way to prioritize “must-win battles” for company survival and differentiation?

GOALS:

This EIRMA Special Interest Group Digitalisation aims to showcase practical experience examples to help building a practical guidelines for RD managers on how to implement a digitalisation roadmap and promote industrial technology innovation.
